Modern Medallion Attempt

IMG_9729

July 31st was the deadline for submitting Riley Blake fabric challenge projects for the Modern Quilt Guild.  Due to some extenuating circumstances (many of you know my father died in June) I didn’t get officially started until about three weeks ago.  I had just bought a copy of the awesome new book The Modern Medallion Workbook by Janice Zeller Ryan and Beth Vassalo and the idea to make a medallion style quilt appealed to me.  My favorite quilt in the book is the June quilt, so I kept the book open to that page just as inspiration for my own creation while working on my design.  I also remembered seeing some medallions made by Gwen Marston so I pulled out one of her books to use as inspiration (which is where I got the idea for the black and white striped frame).

Usually these contests provide fat eighths of a select range in the collection, so I added a layer cake to the fabric to give myself more options, and more large floral motifs to use in the design.  Bea (my oldest) made almost all the yo-yos for this quilt.  After showing her how to do it, she was on a roll and even taught her friend how to make them too.

The yo-yos are my favorite part of the quilt.  Making a “modern” quilt using yo-yos and rick-rack seemed almost an impossible feat, but I think the medallion is “modernish” for certain.  The limited colors, improv nature of the design process and the “made” fabric in two sections, and the feeling of negative space from a distance all add up to a quilt my grandmother inspired, but probably wouldn’t have made herself.

Even the buttons are stark, just black and white (and a few gray and white), but they are playful too.  The gathered ribbon ric-rac is one of my favorite Riley Blake products.  I’ve used it numerous times on dresses for Veronica but never on a quilt before.  It was simple to sew down (I just used my machine, versus hand-tacking all the yo-yos).  It comes in red and aqua, and is available at  Donna’s Lavender Nest.

The back of the quilt absorbed some of the design elements I wasn’t able to use on the front.  Originally I planned to make a “stepping stone” round in the medallion, but it never felt right because it closed in the open space of the entire medallion.  So a few of those pavers along with a hibiscus with black and white leaves bring some beauty to the back.

The garden at my home looks pretty messy this season.  I haven’t had a lot of time with the baby to spend outside working in it.  Luckily the veggies we planted in April right before she was born are doing just fine without too much human intervention.  But I wish I could say the space looked more neat and orderly.  So for photos we took the quilt to the only place I could think of with a “cottage garden.”

Can you spot the bumblebee moth in the petunias?  The entire time we were taking photos, bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and even dragonflies were buzzing all over the garden.  After I finished photographing the quilt, Bea took the camera and captured images of some six-legged friends.

IMG_9591

This bumblebee moth kept us company the entire time, buzzing from one petunia to another.  It’s such a rare treat to see one.  We’ve seen one at our house this summer too (visiting nearly the exact kind of petunia no less!).

This buckeye was one of about twenty flitting about.   Its wings have seen better days.

I’ll take my butterflies plain or fancy.  I think this is a cabbage white butterfly.

The final quilt measures 50” x 50” and is made with fabrics from Cottage Garden by The Quilted Fish (Amanda Herring), Riley Blake Le Crème basics, and Riley Blake Vintage White solid.

Churn Dash Cosmonaut {a finished quilt}

Here are the final photos of my Modern Quilt Guild Michael Miller Challenge quilt.

067

The pattern is called “Unchurned” and comes from the book “Accentuate the Negative” by Trisch Price.  I followed the dimensions for the quilt but made the corner pieces 4 inches bigger than necessary and cut them wonky, but maybe not wonky enough for it to really show.

121

I tried to include selvages from every fabric used in the quilt.

025

There are many pieces that read Michael Miller or are the color dots from selvages.

037

I thought it would be cool to include the color dots because really this quilt is about using all those colors—from new Michael Miller fabrics like Petal Pinwheels and Just My Type to mixing in Madrona Road and Whimsy Windows.  If the color worked, I tried to incorporate it in the quilt.

031

Using solids was also a goal for this quilt.  The solid dark gray is Michael Miller cotton couture in charcoal.  The coral is also Michael Miller.  The provenance of the green, grays, cream, and aqua is unknown.

097

The gray rectangles are quilted densely with back-and-forth lines.

086

And each of the gray half-square triangles are quilted with big and small circles.  The top thread is dark gray and the bobbin thread is light aqua.  Getting the tension right took a lot of practice, but overall the stitching is really good.

096

The rest of the quilt is stippled densely with aqua thread on top and bottom.

102

The different quilting styles give the quilt a nice texture that is not stiff at all.

I tried to get creative with some of the piecing.  This flower is pieced from yellow and blue fabrics.

091

There are several fussy cut cats.

111

And one bird.

087

A fun little curved piece.

112

A pretty yellow flower.

109

And some flying geese.

 128

The back has a pieced section…and quite a few puckers.  It was a major disappointment on my end.  I made the mistake of quilting the solid sections before the center section, and ended up with too much backing fabric in the center.  The good news is this quilt is going to hang in my living room, so no one will be the wiser, and it’s a lesson learned to always quilt from the center out.

162

The quilting on the back through these flowers is my favorite part of the quilt.

144

This quilt is entitled “Churn Dash Cosmonaut” for the fact that it’s a micro and macro view of a churn dash and the cat fabric is called “Atomic Tabbies.”  The song “Low” by Cracker may have had something to do with it too…

155

The finished size is 72” square.  I’ll be linking up to Crazy Mom Quilts and Fort Worth Fabric Studio.

MQG Madrona Road Challenge

1-IMG_0744

This is the quilted pillow I made with the Madrona Road fabric provided by Michael Miller for The Modern Quilt Guild’s challenge.  You can see all the amazing projects here.

1-IMG_0746

For the pattern I used the freezer paper method with templates.  Each block has 2 y-seams which was a first for me.  I used black, cream, and light gray Perle cotton to hand quilt inside each star.  Then I also quilted in the ditch with my machine.

The finished pillow measures 19” x 21”.  Have a fantastic Friday and weekend!  Linking up to Crazy Mom Quilts Finish It Up Friday.

A Small Finish and a WIP

001

This is technically not “my” finish.  Bea sewed this bag on Friday night for her sister.  Ever since we rehabilitated a baby robin this past summer, Esther has loved birds and really wants a cockatiel.  So when I saw this Japanese linen fabric with cockatiels, I had to have it to make something for her, but Bea beat me to it!

002

Bea traced a heart onto Heat n Bond lite and fused it to the outside of the bag, which is a print from Joel Dewberry’s new Notting Hill line.  She picked a blue flower print for the lining and handles.  The pattern is from Diary of a Quilter and uses two fat quarters to make the entire bag.

008

She sewed all the parts of the bag except the decorative stitch used as topstitching around the opening of the bag.  It is currently employed to tote around My Little Ponies.

I also have a pic of a WIP to share.  These are the first few stars for my Modern Quilt Guild Madrona Road Challenge entry.  I’ve never sewn y-seams before!

Linking up to Plum and June’s Monday Link Up.  She’s shared a super cute fabric bucket and now I’ve just got to make one for my girls’ hair ties.
